The Broken

In 1999 my son Chris joined a group in Northampton. Chris was 15 and had been playing percussion with Sue and I for a couple of years. He’d bought a vintage Hayman drum kit and was anxious to find a band. (And it wasn’t that cool to play in your parent’s band either!) Anyway I ended up having to drive him to the rehearsals at a church where the group played for the monthly youth event and after I got to know them a little was able to help them with their arrangements of their songs. Then Sue and I were booked to play two festivals and we needed a band, so I enlisted the drummer (Chris), plus the lead guitarist (Jamie Jones) and the bass player (Simon Garbutt) to tour with us. The tour was really good and I thought that maybe we should record an album together. In the meantime, however, things went pear shaped with Chris’ band and it was the following Spring before we finally got into the studio. I enlisted the help of Dan Harris, the bass player who’d played on the “Going Back” album and who’d worked with us back in the days of the Misfits and we started rehearsing for the album and for an open air Celebration to mark the Millennium. The basic sessions took two days at Premier Studios in Corby, the same studio where I’d recorded my first album, and then we played the event at the football ground and promptly split up. We recorded the overdubs, backing vocals etc and the album was finally finished in late 2000 and about a year too late according to my son Chris. It had some good reviews but was a bit too way out for those who’d got used to my country rock style, so it never sold well. Still, we think it’s great and still sounds good today and it’s Sue’s favourite album so it can’t be all bad, can it?
